Types of Marriage in Nepal

Marriage is a social legal union where persons of two different sex come together to fulfill their needs. Marriage is sacred relationship with commitment and responsibility. It is a universal phenomenon.

It exists in every society or tribe or every corner of the world. Marriage is as old as this society. It is for fulfilling each other needs like physical needs, social needs, emotional needs, etc.

It is believed that marriage is about 4350 years old and the evidence suggests that first recorded marriage was in 2350 B.C. Moving with the time marriage has evolved so much.

As time passed human has evolved so much physically and mentally which results in evolving of marriage as well. Marriage is a way of living life that helps to form a proper and disciplined society.

It maintains a system that makes a human civilize and different than other beings.

Everyone needs support in different stages of life and that support can be received through marriage. When a child is born s/he needs support to grow.

Marriage provides legal parents to a child and it becomes obligation and the responsibility for a parent to grow a child that born after their marriage.

Marriage provides identity to a child and it is the duty of a parent to take care of their children. Similarly, when parents become old, they get support from their children. Marriage helps to fulfill the needs and support to a person that he/she needs to live a life.

Marriage regulates the sex life. Once a person gets married he/she can only consummate to his/her spouse otherwise it will not be accepted by the society. Marriages are done for many other different reasons as well.

It is very necessary to save the existence of human beings.

If a male and female consummate with each other and give birth to a baby without marriage then a society will not accept that child and the mother unless a father is ready to accept.

A child born without a father have to face identity crisis in the society. Even though marriage has evolved so much in western culture it is still difficult for an eastern single mother in the developing countries like Nepal, India, Pakistan, etc.

Most of the marriages in Nepal are arranged but there are many people who do the marriages besides arranged. Todays’ generation people are educated and independent, they want to take this important decision of their life themselves.

That’s why they get marry the ones whom they love even if their parents don’t allow it. Looking the way of marriage, there are mostly four types of marriage in Nepal. They are:

1. Arrange Marriage

Arrange marriage is the most popular and sacred type of marriage. This is a traditional wedding where all the rituals are fulfill. It is decided by the parents of the bride and groom including them.

In this marriage, parents check all the family background, then decide whether their children are getting married or not.

Survey has shown that in arrange marriage there is very much low divorce rate as they are supported by their family during their hard times. In Nepal, 90 percent of the marriages are arranged.

2. Love Marriage

As people are getting educated and independent, love marriage has been increasing drastically. It is done with or without consent of a family. In this type of marriage, children choose a partner themselves and get married.

Children ask their parents for their permission but even if their parents don’t give them a permission, they still marry and decide to live together.

3. Court Marriage

The marriage is done in the court. It is mostly done in Nepal if their parents don’t give a permission to marry to their children. To get marry in the court, you should reach certain legal age for marriage with few friends for the evidence of your marriage.

4. Eloping

When a boy and a girl decide to marry without telling their family then it is called eloping. It is mostly done by the teenagers in Nepal.

In the eloping, a couple may tell their friends for help or secretly run away to get away. This way of marriage has high chance of divorce rate.
